Crock Pot Apple Cobbler Experiment

Do you ever hear the sound of fresh produce calling you from the refrigerator? “Use me, use me, do something with me before I go bad…..”   I have been hearing this from some fresh apples I had in the produce drawer of my fridge for days.  I made the decision; today was the day. (It was so cold outside that I had no intention of leaving this house, anyway!)
I wanted to make something that would smell lovely and taste cinnamon-y, but that wouldn’t require making pastry dough. I was not in the mood for persnickety dough-making today! I thought I’d try something out in the crock pot, since it would be a long process, and I could enjoy the fragrance of cooked apples and spices for hours instead of minutes.

My kitchen became my laboratory (say this like Dexter on Dexter’s Laboratory): la BOR a tory.  It’s more fun.  😉

I did this:

Wash your apples
Peel them, then core & slice
All the ingredients you'll need: flour, spices, brown sugar, apples, and butter
All the ingredients you'll need: flour, spices, brown sugar, apples, and butter
Place all the apples (I ended up w/7 cups) in the bottom of the crock pot
Combine spices, flour, sugar, and butter in a mixing bowl
Place the flour on top of the apples in the crock pot, and gently pat down
Not necessarily pretty at this point, but here is the crusty top
Serve it up! Add ice cream if you're lucky enough to have some on hand.

“I know the look of an apple that is roasting and sizzling on the hearth
on a winter’s evening, and I know the comfort that comes of eating it hot,
along with some sugar and a drench of cream… I know how the nuts taken
in conjunction with winter apples, cider, and doughnuts, make old people’s
tales and old jokes sound fresh and crisp and enchanting.”

~ Mark Twain

This ended up being nothing fancy, but really tasty!  I think I’ll try it next without the baking powder to see how the topping ends up.  With this first attempt I ended up with a cake-like topping, not truly like a cobbler topping, but I wanted to share with you still, as it was good!  The scent was fantastic, too, which is really a huge part of why I wanted to make this in the first place.  Next time, I will add 1/2 tsp of ground cloves, as well. They are the perfect companion to apples.

I hope you enjoy trying it, too, or that you’ll try your own experiment and share it with me! It’s really fun to get in there in your kitchen, be it large or small,  and create something good!

Crock Pot Apple Cobbler

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 medium cooking apples, peeled, cored, sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened

Preparation:

Grease crock pot, and arrange apple slices in bottom. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, spices, baking powder, salt, and butter. Cover the apples with this mixture. Tamp down lightly. Cook on high for 3 to 4 hours, until apples are tender.  Cooking longer may cause edges to scorch.

Bon appétit!
